Egyptians believed the healing powers of gold. Gold was believed to be a divine metal, and was said toresemble the sun, perhaps because of its shininess and radiance. They believed that gold was the flesh of the sun god Ra and that the bones of the gods were made of silver.
Romans used gold preparations for treatment of skin lesions and sores. It is believed that Cleopatra wore pure gold for a radiant complexion. In ancient Chinese medicine, gold was the secret to youthful skin. Today, gold leaf is used in the treatment and rejuvenation of skin conditions.
